Adoption Photolistings of Children – Not in a Child’s Best Interests

On my computer screen is a picture of a girl, “Pretty and vivacious”. Another girl is described as “very glamorous”. On another page an African American girl is listed as “currently in therapy” and “developmentally delayed”. A boy is described as “on medication to assist him with symptoms of ADHD.” and “does not have contact with any of his family members.” One girl “is very sensitive, can misread social cues and often believes people are making fun of her”. A girl “occasionally exhibits disruptive behavior”. A boy of 16 is described as an “attractive little boy”.

All of the pictures have the child’s first name included. Is this a fraternity boy’s prank? Who would put pictures of children on the web with their names and such descriptions?

The website is one of many on the internet advertising children. Near the listings of older children are listings of couples, singles and gay people who “look forward to expanding our family and cherishing the addition of a new baby”. None of the prospective adopters’ ads says “occasionally exhibits disruptive behavior” or “can misread social cues”, although surely it happens. Even listing their ads seeking an infant shows great insensitivity toward children who have been advertised as available for years.

“This is such an invasion into these kids lives, exposing to the entire world that they are an orphan or making it out that they haven’t got parents that love them.” emailed one woman who had been in an orphanage as a child. “And with these girls it looks like they are advertising their sexuality. It could cause some pedophile creep to come forward and adopt these young girls.”

“If it gets children adopted, it’s worth it.” I’m told by a woman at one agency. I imagine her picture on the web with a description like this: Helga, age 22 “Sometimes insensitive, slightly challenged, needs help to learn to consider others feelings.”

One more click and I find myself at the Rodent Adoption Listing website which displays a picture of a 12 month old Champagne Hood and a 6 month old Mink. “These two girls are very sweet, friendly, active and extremely outgoing.”

Several websites caution people not to say children are “put up” for adoption because it brings to mind the time when children were literally placed on raised platform at a public meeting like so much meat. Isn’t the adoption photo listing just as humiliating? Even the rodents get a nicer advertisement than the kids.

In an early sign that mobile radio is coming of age, Clear Channel Communications in January sold out its inventory of certain mobile ads.

Open or Semi-Open Adoption Matching Process

When you opt for private infant adoption, your process may be a little different than if you were going through international placement or placement from foster care, but the emotional roll-a-coaster effect is still present. In foster care placement as well as international placement, after you have qualified, had your home study, processed all of the paperwork, then usually a child will be ‘referred’ to you for placement. Naturally, you have the right to refuse a referral, but the average person doesn’t. In private infant adoption, the birth mother and/or birth father choose the adoptive family.

Today, almost all birth mothers want a semi-open or open adoption rather than a closed adoption with the adoptive family. Because of today’s recommended best practices, almost all agencies allow the birth mother to choose the family she wants as parents for her baby. Studies by the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute in Washington D.C. have shown that the more open the adoption, the better it is for the adoptee, the birth family and the adoptive parents as well. That is a hard concept to get your mind around when you are rebounding from years of failed infertility treatments and you have watched too many ‘adoption stories’ on the Lifetime Channel. But it is true.

Most adoptions are completed without any problems and the adoptive family and birth family forge a real bond and a lifelong relationship. However, you don’t know how your process will proceed when you begin this challenging and emotional experience. I recommend that you opt for a semi-open adoption to begin with and leave the door open for a more open adoption if it is possible. A semi-open adoption is one in which you meet the birth family and are given an opportunity to develop a close bond and relationship with each other and attend the birth of your child. This type of relationship may include your extended family as well as the birth family’s extended family. The difference in this type of adoption and a fully open adoption is no identifying information is exchanged by the parties. I hope and pray that you will wind up with an open adoption in which you and the birth family have exchanged identifying information and are contacting each other directly and maybe even meeting periodically so your child and any siblings can learn about each other. But you don’t know if that is possible in the beginning of the relationship. The openness of your adoption can be increased as time goes on.

In our agency, a full 25% of our adoptive families and birth families have opened their adoption to include the exchange of last names and identifying information by the actual birth of the child. In most of those cases, the birth mother puts the name the adoptive family has chosen for the child as well as their last name on the baby’s birth certificate. In many cases, the adoptive family and their extended family members as well as the birth family and their extended family members are present at the birth and spend hours or days together making memories for the sake of the child they all love.

Even if they don’t have a fully open adoption from birth, another 20% of our adoptive families are able to grow their relationship with the birth family into a fully open relationship within the first two or three years. So our anecdotal experience is that roughly ½ of our placements are fully open eventually. This is not perfect, but we feel that it respects the needs and wishes of all parties involved.

If a mother matches with a family and is unable to make that attachment and bond with them for some reason, she may ask for a rematch. Also, we have families who for one reason or another have agreed to a match under circumstances in which they find impossible to continue and have asked for a rematch. Our agency believes that you and the birth mother are the only people who have a right to make decisions about what type of an adoption you want. Occasionally, a mismatch will happen. That is fine. We will be glad to rematch both parties, because this adoption is about them and the baby, not our agency or our time line constraints or our cash flow or our ego. It’s about you as the parents, both biological and adoptive, and most importantly the child.

The scenario I have described is a wonderful process to watch from the outside as well as to live from the inside. The only way to achieve this type of adoption is to take time with the decision making process. Don’t be rushed into a decision and don’t be afraid to voice concerns about the situation. My experience tells me that if you are having concerns about the birth mother and the openness of the adoption, then she is too. When both parties are participating in the type of adoption and placement that they need and want, then very little else can go wrong.

ABOUT

Who are we? The Rick Hansen Institute is a collaboration of people with spinal cord injuries, researchers and service providers committed to addressing priority needs and generating solutions for people with SCI.

Where have we come from – what is our history? Since his Man In Motion World Tour more than 20 years ago, Rick Hansen has nurtured a dream of true collaboration across the SCI community. Six years ago, his dream began to be realized when the SCI Network was established with funding from the federal government (Western Economic Development) invested through the Rick Hansen Foundation. Three initiatives evolved — the SCI Solutions Alliance, the Rick Hansen SCI Registry, and the SCI Translational Research Network, which was funded by a million investment from Health Canada. In April 2008, a decision was made to combine these three entities into a single organization, which is more effectively and efficiently addressing priority needs and generating solutions for people with SCI. This merger represents an integrated approach that strives for synergy and best use of the approximately million that has been invested in our work.

What outcomes or results are we looking for? Together, we strive to:

-minimize disability and maximize the quality of life of people with SCI

-enhance health, social and economic outcomes through seamless coordination among the many organizations that provide services to people with SCI.
What do we do? How do we achieve our desired outcomes? The Rick Hansen Institute:

-identifies and translates SCI research breakthroughs into innovations, validated solutions and best practices

-work with our community partners across Canada to identify, fund and facilitate solutions that address priority needs of Canadians with SCI

-moves knowledge into action, promoting adoption of best practices at all points on the continuum of treatment, care and support for people with SCI.

The Rick Hansen Institute became incorporated in March, 2009. We received charitable status from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in January, 2010 and now operate as an independent organization.

Collecting Stamps From All Over The Place

Believe it or not, the first stamp was issued in England on the 6th of May, in the year 1840. Since then, the issuance of stamps grew in all countries and the collection of stamps have also increased, and there is no stopping it. And because the number of stamps have grown in leaps and bounds – for the sake of convenience – collectors have limited themselves into single country collecting.

Multiple country collecting

Collecting stamps from one country compared to collecting stamps from various nations is better as there is a lot more time and effort to have access to more stamps locally than internationally.

For instance, it is a bit difficult to complete an Austrian stamp collection because of its rarity and only a few stamps are ever available.
The easiest and probably the most famous stamp to collect are those that come from one’s own country.

However it all depends on your own preference. For instance, stamps from Austria began to be collected through a specific motif that a particular stamp or group of stamps have. An example would be the collection of stamps as according to the pictures they have, such as flowers, dogs, trains, paintings, ships, buildings, weapons or women.

However, a beginning stamp collector or those that intend to collect on an average basis may do well to start gathering stamps from their own country.

Stamps that are issued fresh hot of the post are very affordable. Believe it or not, stamps that have just been released may be bought with no additional charge from any postal office right on the day of its issuance.

Beautiful US stamps about beautiful US

If you are willing to collect stamps about the beautiful country that is the US of A, there are a set of stamps out there which showcase such.
The Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, for instance are shown in the stamp issued by the United States Postal Service. The stamp that costs a mere seventy-five cents shows the Great Smokey Mountain during sunset as photographed by David Muench from California, specifically in Santa Barbara.

The breathtaking picture view also has portions of Tennessee and North Carolina. This national park is best known for its diverse plant life as well as animal life as one will definitely see when he hikes along its eight hundred mile trail.

Another beautiful US landmark that has been immortalized in a stamp is the Yosemite National Park. The stamp costs eight-four US cents and it features a picture of the valley gates of the Yosemite as photographed by Galen Rowell of California, specifically Emervville.

If you are a nature lover, or even if you are not, collecting the stamp will most probably make you one.

Yosemite park was established as such on the first of October in the year 1890. the park boasts of a variety of natural features and geographical wonders such as meadows that stretch as far as the eye can see, lakes, waterfalls, sequoias and monoliths that are made out of granite. These granites are called half Dome and El Capitan.

Believe it or not, Yosemite has been designated as ninety five percent authentic wilderness.
Another US treasure found on a sixty three cent stamp is Utah’s Bryce Canyon. These stamps are all part of the Scenic Landscapes in America released by the US Postal Service.

The canyon is beautifully photographed by Tom Till from the city of Moab, Utah. Thanks to erosion, the Utah landscape developed spires now called as whimsical-looking hoodoos. Bryce Canyon was recognized nationally as a monument in 1923.

America’s crops

Believe it or not, the crops grown in America are also featured in US stamps. The following crops has been featured, beans, corn, squashes, chili peppers, sunflowers.

An artist named Steve Buchanan designed five of the stamps through the slides photographed by his wife. Other crops featured were corn ears, chilies (both the red and green type), lima beans, pintos, squash, pintos, seeds and sunflowers.

All in all, collecting stamps is a worthwhile activity that anyone who has the perseverance, patience and passion to pursue could. All it takes is a good eye for detail and a liking for anything and everything literally small.

Vpi Pet Insurance – Top Ten Things To Look For In A Pet Insurance Policy

Pet insurance has become an integral part of a pet lover’s world. This is because pet insurance takes care of the medical and routine expenses like checkups and vaccinations depending on the policy you have selected. Though just a couple of decades old in the United States, pet insurance is fast gaining importance due to the high cost of living and the rising cost of medical bills.

There are plenty of pet insurance companies who offer coverage to your pets for various medical emergencies. As a pet owner it is important that you select the right insurance policy to make the most of it.

The top 10 things you should be looking at before buying pet insurance are:

1. Check for type of coverage you seek – Some companies provide for accident plans, other for illness and high end coverage for surgeries. The premiums vary for all. So select one or a combination which covers the nature of your pet the closest.

2. Budget – You should have a premium figure in mind which you can pay for the insurance policy. There are many plans in the market to suit all budget types. You will not only have to know the monthly amount you can put aside for your pet but also the long term consequences of such investments. Paying low premiums may at times leave you out of cover for a large amount of incidents and make your policy redundant.

3. Select from multiple options – Carefully search the market for the best pet insurance deal for your pet. Look at all the policies that are on offer and select the one which is most suited for your pet. You know the peculiarities of your pet, so you should be the one to decide which insurer is best. Do not get carried away by sales talk.

4. Check for renewal terms – Some pet insurance companies treat an illness in a year and then classify the same as pre existing when the policy comes up for renewal. This means that pre existing conditions will not be covered as part of claims and you will not be getting any insurance benefit on it the time your pet contacts that illness again. So beware.

5. Insurer’s track record –Select an insurer with a proven track record of insuring pets. Check for any customer testimonials – positive and negative to decide. Read up on the insurance provider’s certifications and credentials before you commit to any pet policy for your precious pet.

6. Scope of insurance coverage – Some pet insurers want you to visit the vet who is in their network. This may not be feasible for you for various reasons. So check if your pet insurance plan is good enough to use at the vet you prefer to take your pet to.

7. The age at which you can insure your pet – Some insurance companies charge very high premiums for older pets and also do not cover many of the illnesses that you’re pet may have at that age. So it will be wise to check up on the pet insurance policy if you have an older pet.

Get ready for fuzzy cuteness and exotic creatures …. Me Sam and MisterNES swing by a pet shop in Japan and its almost as good as going to the zoo. Some good info on pet stores and pets in Japan here aside from the You Tuber antics at first. I wonder… were some of the animals for pets or for food???? Hmmmmmm. If you want a serious pet here get ready for some creative financing. All the pets range from the basic rodents to very exotic and rare reptiles and mammals. The range of services catering to pets has grown dramatically in recent years. Clothes for animals have been around for quite some time, but did you know that dogs can now relieve their stress with pet aromatherapy or a session in an oxygen capsule? Nowadays if you cannot bear the thought of leaving your pets at home when you are away, you can check them into a pet hotel; you can also take out a pet insurance policy in the unfortunate event that he/she falls ill. No doubt this trend is due to the increase in pet owners who consider their furry loved ones members of the family. The Pet Food Manufacturers Association of Japan reports that as of 2006 there were 12.09 million dogs and 12.46 million cats kept as pets in Japan, amounting to a total of 24.55 million critters. Seeing as how 10 years ago there were only 10.02 million dogs and 7.85 million cats, this represents a considerable rise. The reasons for this jump include increases in the numbers of married couples whose children have flown the nest …

Adoption Options for Families

When you reach the decision that adoption is the right choice for your family, there are many options to consider. The process of adoption can be confusing and complex. It’s important to weigh all the options to make the best decision about how you should go about extending your family. From the age of the child to how much contact you might want with the birth parent(s) there is much to consider.

After many couples go through the lengthy process of attempting natural conception and find they aren’t successful in spite of much effort, they may turn to adoption as the solution. With the stress of ovulation calendars and fertility behind them, it’s time to focus their energy on finding the right child to complete their family. There are many resources and adoption counseling services that can help guide you as you enter this important decision-making phase. From domestic to intercountry adoptions and infant to foster care adoptions, there are many confusing terms they must juggle and attempt to understand.

The first thing to consider is whether the child should be adopted from the United States or another country (domestic or intercountry). Once that decision is made, they can progress with other stages of the process. Domestic adoptions might offer advantages like ethnic similarity, the option of birth parent involvement, and more that make many people choose this option. Intercountry adoptions make birth parent involvement nearly impossible, which is a plus to some couples seeking to adopt. Intercountry adoptions can be quite complex and a bit lengthy, which is something else to consider.

Once you have come to decide where you will adopt from, it’s time to figure out if there is a particular age you’re interested in adopting. Domestic adoptions may give more options with regard to age, allowing the parents to choose infant adoptions. Infant adoptions can have a lengthy waiting period. Foster care adoptions are another domestic option, involving children in foster care who are often older and sometimes considered special needs cases.

When you make the decision to adopt if natural conception isn’t possible, or for other reasons, there is a great deal to consider. You are changing the life of your family and a child forever, so the decision shouldn’t be taken lightly. Being informed about the process and the options is helpful in allowing the best decision to be made.

The Super Consumer and the Importance of New Homeowner Mailing Lists

New homeowners are some of the biggest consumers in America today. These consumers spend up to 10 times more compared to established homeowners. These ’super consumers’ are big spenders with specific needs and susceptibilities. Reaching out to this base of super consumers can drive your sales. It is imperative to identify these consumers quickly; a task easily accomplished with new homeowner mailing lists.

New homeowners are typically creditworthy and they also posses more disposable income compared to established home owners. The needs of new homeowners are readily apparent. This type of consumer is more likely to be interesting in renovation and furniture, insurance and home maintenance. They may also be craving other services such as babysitting, dog walking or even medical care. These consumers are still adjusting to their new surroundings and are hungry for products and services that can add value to their lives.

Utilizing direct selling strategies on these new homeowners can be effective in securing a strong position in the hearts and minds of these consumers. Timing can be crucial in securing long term business relationships with these super consumers. Being the first to providing a product or service increases the likelihood of continued product usage. If this relationship is carefully cultivated, in the long run the consumer would have developed a strong sense of brand preference towards your product or service.

The easiest way to identify these consumers is by purchasing a list. There are several companies that offer telemarketing and mailing lists. These lists typically vary and can contain pertinent information towards various niches. Typically, new homeowner mailing lists are readily available and can be easily purchased.

These lists can be an effective way of quickly targeting new homeowners. It is highly targeted and easy to obtain with minimal fuss.

Advertising mail can be an excellent way of increasing awareness. Advertising mail operates in a less cluttered environment when compared to mass media advertising. Your marketing message has a better chance of grabbing and holding your consumers’ attention. Consumers who keep your advertising material may constantly be reminded of your product or service, thus encouraging top-of-mind awareness. Eat-out advertisements are excellent examples of just that.

Using advertising mail can also create demand for your product or service. New homeowners who have pets or children may be potential consumers waiting for the correct marketing message that triggers their demand. Businesses that are successful in creating consumer demand are more likely to find success in selling their products to these newly ‘inspired’ consumers.

Customer retention is also vital in building a healthy long-term consumer relationship. New homeowner lists provides a strong information base that you can build upon. It allows you to connect with new or old consumers. Reconnecting with past consumers can also be profitable, as they would have already formed expectations and experiences with your product or service.

New homeowners are high spending super consumers waiting to be introduced to your product or service. This highly profitably niche of consumers should be identified and targeted quickly. Fortunately, new homeowner lists are readily available for purchase, making consumer identification quick and simple.

But, again, why "Essex"? In a comment on this photo, Birbeck helps clarify:

I can only surmise that he’s having a ‘dig’ at Essex UK, especially with the misspelling of ‘Loitering’. Here, the general view of the urban districts in Essex: working class but with right wing views; that they’re not the most intellectual bunch; rather obsessed with fashion (well, their idea of it); their place of worship is the shopping mall; enjoy rowdy nights out; girls are thought of as being dumb, fake blonde hair/tans and promiscuous; and guys are good at the ‘chit chat’, and swagger around showing off their dosh (money).

It was also the region that once had Europe’s largest Ford motor factory. In its heyday, 1 in 3 British cars were made in Dagenham, Essex. Pay was good for such unskilled labour, generations worked mind-numbing routines on assembly lines for 80 years. In 2002 the recession ended the dream.

His street art, which combines graffiti writing with a distinctive stencilling technique, is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass who maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti.[9] Art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder.[10]

Banksy’s first film, Exit Through The Gift Shop, billed as "the world’s first street art disaster movie", made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.[11] The film was released in the UK on March 5.[12]

Career

Banksy started as a freehand graffiti artist 1992–1994[14] as one of Bristol’s DryBreadZ Crew (DBZ), with Kato and Tes.[15] He was inspired by local artists and his work was part of the larger Bristol underground scene. From the start he used stencils as elements of his freehand pieces, too.[14] By 2000 he had turned to the art of stencilling after realising how much less time it took to complete a piece. He claims he changed to stencilling whilst he was hiding from the police under a train carriage, when he noticed the stencilled serial number[16] and by employing this technique, he soon became more widely noticed for his art around Bristol and London.[16]

Stencil on the waterline of The Thekla, an entertainment boat in central Bristol – (wider view). The image of Death is based on a 19th century etching illustrating the pestilence of The Great Stink.[17]

Banksy’s stencils feature striking and humorous images occasionally combined with slogans. The message is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist or anti-establishment. Subjects often include rats, monkeys, policemen, soldiers, children, and the elderly.

In late 2001, on a trip to Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, he met up with the Gen-X pastellist, visual activist, and recluse James DeWeaver in Byron Bay[clarification needed], where he stencilled a parachuting rat with a clothes peg on its nose above a toilet at the Arts Factory Lodge. This stencil can no longer be located. He also makes stickers (the Neighbourhood Watch subvert) and sculpture (the murdered phone-box), and was responsible for the cover art of Blur’s 2003 album Think Tank.

2000

The album cover for Monk & Canatella’s Do Community Service was conceived and illustrated by Banksy, based on his contribution to the "Walls on fire" event in Bristol 1998.[18][citation needed]

2002

On 19 July 2002, Banksy’s first Los Angeles exhibition debuted at 33 1/3 Gallery, a small Silverlake venue owned by Frank Sosa. The exhibition, entitled Existencilism, was curated by 33 1/3 Gallery, Malathion, Funk Lazy Promotions, and B+.[19]

2003

In 2003 in an exhibition called Turf War, held in a warehouse, Banksy painted on animals. Although the RSPCA declared the conditions suitable, an animal rights activist chained herself to the railings in protest.[20] He later moved on to producing subverted paintings; one example is Monet’s Water Lily Pond, adapted to include urban detritus such as litter and a shopping trolley floating in its reflective waters; another is Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, redrawn to show that the characters are looking at a British football hooligan, dressed only in his Union Flag underpants, who has just thrown an object through the glass window of the cafe. These oil paintings were shown at a twelve-day exhibition in Westbourne Grove, London in 2005.[21]

2004

In August 2004, Banksy produced a quantity of spoof British £10 notes substituting the picture of the Queen’s head with Princess Diana’s head and changing the text "Bank of England" to "Banksy of England." Someone threw a large wad of these into a crowd at Notting Hill Carnival that year, which some recipients then tried to spend in local shops. These notes were also given with invitations to a Santa’s Ghetto exhibition by Pictures on Walls. The individual notes have since been selling on eBay for about £200 each. A wad of the notes were also thrown over a fence and into the crowd near the NME signing tent at The Reading Festival. A limited run of 50 signed posters containing ten uncut notes were also produced and sold by Pictures on Walls for £100 each to commemorate the death of Princess Diana. One of these sold in October 2007 at Bonhams auction house in London for £24,000.

2005

In August 2005, Banksy, on a trip to the Palestinian territories, created nine images on Israel’s highly controversial West Bank barrier. He reportedly said "The Israeli government is building a wall surrounding the occupied Palestinian territories. It stands three times the height of the Berlin Wall and will eventually run for over 700km—the distance from London to Zurich. "[22]

2006

• Banksy held an exhibition called Barely Legal, billed as a "three day vandalised warehouse extravaganza" in Los Angeles, on the weekend of 16 September. The exhibition featured a live "elephant in a room", painted in a pink and gold floral wallpaper pattern.[23]
• After Christina Aguilera bought an original of Queen Victoria as a lesbian and two prints for £25,000,[24] on 19 October 2006 a set of Kate Moss paintings sold in Sotheby’s London for £50,400, setting an auction record for Banksy’s work. The six silk-screen prints, featuring the model painted in the style of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe pictures, sold for five times their estimated value. His stencil of a green Mona Lisa with real paint dripping from her eyes sold for £57,600 at the same auction.[25]
• In December, journalist Max Foster coined the phrase, "the Banksy Effect", to illustrate how interest in other street artists was growing on the back of Banksy’s success.[26]

2007

• On 21 February 2007, Sotheby’s auction house in London auctioned three works, reaching the highest ever price for a Banksy work at auction: over £102,000 for his Bombing Middle England. Two of his other graffiti works, Balloon Girl and Bomb Hugger, sold for £37,200 and £31,200 respectively, which were well above their estimated prices.[27] The following day’s auction saw a further three Banksy works reach soaring prices: Ballerina With Action Man Parts reached £96,000; Glory sold for £72,000; Untitled (2004) sold for £33,600; all significantly above estimated values.[28] To coincide with the second day of auctions, Banksy updated his website with a new image of an auction house scene showing people bidding on a picture that said, "I Can’t Believe You Morons Actually Buy This Shit."[6]
• In February 2007, the owners of a house with a Banksy mural on the side in Bristol decided to sell the house through Red Propeller art gallery after offers fell through because the prospective buyers wanted to remove the mural. It is listed as a mural which comes with a house attached.[29]
• In April 2007, Transport for London painted over Banksy’s iconic image of a scene from Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, with Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta clutching bananas instead of guns. Although the image was very popular, Transport for London claimed that the "graffiti" created "a general atmosphere of neglect and social decay which in turn encourages crime" and their staff are "professional cleaners not professional art critics".[30] Banksy tagged the same site again (pictured at right). This time the actors were portrayed as holding real guns instead of bananas, but they were adorned with banana costumes. Banksy made a tribute art piece over this second Pulp Fiction piece. The tribute was for 19-year-old British graffiti artist Ozone, who was hit by an underground train in Barking, East London, along with fellow artist Wants, on 12 January 2007.[31] The piece was of an angel wearing a bullet-proof vest, holding a skull. He also wrote a note on his website, saying:

The last time I hit this spot I painted a crap picture of two men in banana costumes waving hand guns. A few weeks later a writer called Ozone completely dogged it and then wrote ‘If it’s better next time I’ll leave it’ in the bottom corner. When we lost Ozone we lost a fearless graffiti writer and as it turns out a pretty perceptive art critic. Ozone – rest in peace.[citation needed]

Ozone’s Angel

• On 27 April 2007, a new record high for the sale of Banksy’s work was set with the auction of the work Space Girl & Bird fetching £288,000 (US6,000), around 20 times the estimate at Bonhams of London.[32]
• On 21 May 2007 Banksy gained the award for Art’s Greatest living Briton. Banksy, as expected, did not turn up to collect his award, and continued with his notoriously anonymous status.
• On 4 June 2007, it was reported that Banksy’s The Drinker had been stolen.[33][34]

• At London Zoo, he climbed into the penguin enclosure and painted "We’re bored of fish" in seven foot high letters.[59]
• At Bristol Zoo, he left the message ‘I want out. This place is too cold. Keeper smells. Boring, boring, boring.’ in the elephant enclosure.[60]
• In March 2005, he placed subverted artworks in the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York.[61]

• In April 2006, Banksy created a sculpture based on a crumpled red phone box with a pickaxe in its side, apparently bleeding, and placed it in a street in Soho, London. It was later removed by Westminster Council. BT released a press release, which said: "This is a stunning visual comment on BT’s transformation from an old-fashioned telecommunications company into a modern communications services provider."[66]
• In June 2006, Banksy created an image of a naked man hanging out of a bedroom window on a wall visible from Park Street in central Bristol. The image sparked some controversy, with the Bristol City Council leaving it up to the public to decide whether it should stay or go.[67] After an internet discussion in which 97% (all but 6 people) supported the stencil, the city council decided it would be left on the building.[67] The mural was later defaced with paint.[67]
• In August/September 2006, Banksy replaced up to 500 copies of Paris Hilton’s debut CD, Paris, in 48 different UK record stores with his own cover art and remixes by Danger Mouse. Music tracks were given titles such as "Why am I Famous?", "What Have I Done?" and "What Am I For?". Several copies of the CD were purchased by the public before stores were able to remove them, some going on to be sold for as much as £750 on online auction websites such as eBay. The cover art depicted Paris Hilton digitally altered to appear topless. Other pictures feature her with a dog’s head replacing her own, and one of her stepping out of a luxury car, edited to include a group of homeless people, which included the caption "90% of success is just showing up".[68][69][70]
• In September 2006, Banksy dressed an inflatable doll in the manner of a Guantanamo Bay detainment camp prisoner (orange jumpsuit, black hood, and handcuffs) and then placed the figure within the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California.[71][72]

Technique

Asked about his technique, Banksy said:

“I use whatever it takes. Sometimes that just means drawing a moustache on a girl’s face on some billboard, sometimes that means sweating for days over an intricate drawing. Efficiency is the key.[73]”

Stencils are traditionally hand drawn or printed onto sheets of acetate or card, before being cut out by hand. Because of the secretive nature of Banksy’s work and identity, it is uncertain what techniques he uses to generate the images in his stencils, though it is assumed he uses computers for some images due to the photocopy nature of much of his work.

He mentions in his book, Wall and Piece, that as he was starting to do graffiti, he was always too slow and was either caught or could never finish the art in the one sitting. So he devised a series of intricate stencils to minimise time and overlapping of the colour.

Identity

Banksy’s real name has been widely reported to be Robert or Robin Banks.[74][75][76] His year of birth has been given as 1974.[62]

Simon Hattenstone from Guardian Unlimited is one of the very few people to have interviewed him face-to-face. Hattenstone describes him as "a cross of Jimmy Nail and British rapper Mike Skinner" and "a 28 year old male who showed up wearing jeans and a t-shirt with a silver tooth, silver chain, and one silver earring".[77] In the same interview, Banksy revealed that his parents think their son is a painter and decorator.[77]

In May 2007, an extensive article written by Lauren Collins of the New Yorker re-opened the Banksy-identity controversy citing a 2004 photograph of the artist that was taken in Jamaica during the Two-Culture Clash project and later published in the Evening Standard in 2004.[6]

In October 2007, a story on the BBC website featured a photo allegedly taken by a passer-by in Bethnal Green, London, purporting to show Banksy at work with an assistant, scaffolding and a truck. The story confirms that Tower Hamlets Council in London has decided to treat all Banksy works as vandalism and remove them.[78]

In July 2008, it was claimed by The Mail on Sunday that Banksy’s real name is Robin Gunningham.[3][79] His agent has refused to confirm or deny these reports.

In May 2009, the Mail on Sunday once again speculated about Gunningham being Banksy after a "self-portrait" of a rat holding a sign with the word "Gunningham" shot on it was photographed in East London.[80] This "new Banksy rat" story was also picked up by The Times[81] and the Evening Standard.

Banksy, himself, states on his website:

“I am unable to comment on who may or may not be Banksy, but anyone described as being ‘good at drawing’ doesn’t sound like Banksy to me.[82]”

Controversy

In 2004, Banksy walked into the Louvre in Paris and hung on a wall a picture he had painted resembling the Mona Lisa but with a yellow smiley face. Though the painting was hurriedly removed by the museum staff, it and its counterpart, temporarily on unknown display at the Tate Britain, were described by Banksy as "shortcuts". He is quoted as saying:

“To actually [have to] go through the process of having a painting selected must be quite boring. It’s a lot more fun to go and put your own one up.[83]”

Peter Gibson, a spokesperson for Keep Britain Tidy, asserts that Banksy’s work is simple vandalism,[84] and Diane Shakespeare, an official for the same organization, was quoted as saying: "We are concerned that Banksy’s street art glorifies what is essentially vandalism".[6]

In June 2007 Banksy created a circle of plastic portable toilets, said to resemble Stonehenge at the Glastonbury Festival. As this was in the same field as the "sacred circle" it was felt by many to be inappropriate and his installation was itself vandalized before the festival even opened. However, the intention had always been for people to climb on and interact with it.[citation needed] The installation was nicknamed "Portaloo Sunset" and "Bog Henge" by Festival goers. Michael Eavis admitted he wasn’t fond of it, and the portaloos were removed before the 2008 festival.

In 2010, an artistic feud developed between Banksy and his rival King Robbo after Banksy painted over a 24-year old Robbo piece on the banks of London’s Regent Canal. In retaliation several Banksy pieces in London have been painted over by ‘Team Robbo’.[85][86]

Also in 2010, government workers accidentally painted over a Banksy art piece, a famed "parachuting-rat" stencil, in Australia’s Melbourne CBD. [87]

Giving Love and Care to a Child Waiting for Adoption

Most children expecting adoption usually feel withdrawn from their foster family. In most cases, many of these children waiting for adoption may have come from abusive environments. And taking care of a child waiting for adoption is a no small task for foster parents: They not only provide food and shelter, they also have to provide emotional solace and surety for every foster child left in their care.

Being thrust into an entirely new household, away from their families is both stressful and unnerving. This is the first task that foster parents take on. And this is can be a temptation as well; becoming emotionally attached while taking care of a child waiting for adoption. Foster care is not for everyone. If you’re looking into entering foster parenting, you have to be ready to give it your all.

It takes more than one person to make foster parenting and adoption work. Foster care is a collaboration between foster care parents and homes, and the adoption agencies who support their endeavors. These people seek to ensure that a child waiting for adoption is well-taken cared of. Foster parents work take care of the children while adoption agencies do their own share by screening potential adoptive parents. By working closely together, foster parents and adoption agencies try to maintain a caring environment that a child may dwell in while waiting for adoption into permanent home.

When a child waiting for adoption is introduced to his or her foster parents for the first time, there may be some awkwardness and hesitation. Foster parents, on the other hand are immediately made aware of the emotional scarring the child may have undergone.

A plan must be immediately drawn up to help the child adjust to his or her new environment. Activities are also organized to help the child cope with the adjust and undergo emotional healing. This is crucial for any child waiting for adoption, and foster parents try their best to welcome the child into their home.

One challenge that foster parents must overcome is a child’s instinct to withdraw from his or her environment. Foster parents will try to cure this by working with children, encouraging them to join in activities, and by helping them with their problems through interaction. This helps the children become more comfortable with their environment, and slowly, they ease out of their emotional shells and become more open and comfortable. Soon, they will begin forming bonds with the rest of the foster family.

Intuitive foster parents know that a child waiting for adoption may expect rejection, and consequently may develop self-pity and trust issues. Thus, it is important for them to be able to reach out to the child and make him or her see what a loving and caring permanent home can be. A caring foster parent is the best source of hope for a child waiting for adoption.

If you’re interested in becoming a foster parent, check with your local adoption agency and inquire about the requirements for foster parenting. It will be exhausting, both emotionally and physically, but it will be very rewarding as well. All foster parents know that the greatest reward they can get from being able to help any child waiting for adoption overcome feelings of detachment and rejection and hatred is by showing them that despite the troubles they’ve gone through, there are sincere people who are willing to love and care for them.

Pet Insurance: Know What Different Policies Mean and Read Tips on How to Choose a Cheap Policy

Every time the pet owners have the same question: Do I really need to buy insurance for my pet. Consider this: Vet’s fees in the recent times have risen so much; you may as well pay your mortgage. Fixing a cat’s broken leg, for example, can cost £825. Surgery for a dog that has eaten something dangerous can cost £1,500.
Let’s not forget the impact all this will have on you and your family.(Kid’s especially are attached to the pet and can’t bear to see their dog limping!)

Its not just the injuries which are covered by pet insurance but nowadays all sorts of weird and wonderful eventualities are taken care by pet insurance. For e.g. if your cat is stolen, some providers will pay out the cost of advertising and a reward, or even cover the cost of your holiday if you can’t go because your pet’s ill. It is up to you to choose which type of covers suit your circumstances and then buy.

You may try this reasoning that there is no need to buy pet insurance and it’s better to put some money aside for any kind of potential pet emergency However, there are two main dangers to consider here: first, you’ll be stuck if an expensive problem arises before you’ve built much cash up, and second, your pet won’t be covered for public liability, so if it runs into the road and causes an accident, and the drivers sue, you’ll be liable for the cost .

While the focus of this article is cats and dogs, we also have riders who may be interested in buying insurance for their horses. Horse insurance policies are different than cats and dogs so check before buying. Being the owner of a horse you should be aware that in the sad case of a death of your horse, its disposal can be expensive. Also having a cover which pays towards the cost of repair or replacement of lost or damaged saddlery and tack can be a good thing. You may compare various horse insurances at website mentioned below.

In all cases make sure you check the excess to be paid by the policyholder (you).
Now let’s talk about tips on how to choose pet insurance
It can be a daunting task to choose the right insurance policy given the number of companies out there, but if you do it in a step wise manner it should be a breeze.
1.Start by comparing the price.
2.Consider the policy excess
3.Are you getting lifelong cover?
4.Think about other benefits
5.Read the small print

COMPARE THE PRICE
Obviously, the cost of pet insurance is an important consideration. But different insurers have different ways of setting the price, so always get a quote for your specific circumstances to compare between insurers.

CONSIDER THE EXCESS
There are a number of ways some providers save themselves money when it comes to paying out claims. One of these is by including a high excess on their policies.

The excess is the amount that you have to pay each time you have to claim for a certain condition, so choosing a cheaper product with a higher excess could actually end up costing you money.

ARE YOU GETTING LIFELONG COVER
You should check carefully what you are being offered by pet insurers and understand clearly what they mean by “lifelong cover”. Understanding lifelong cover can be complicated, but here are a few simple guidelines on the types of cover generally available…

Time capped cover
Some plans (often at the cheaper end of the spectrum) will only cover a condition for the first year you claim.
E.g :If your pet developed arthritis, you might be able to claim up to £2500 for the first year’s treatment, but no more. You would then have to cover the cost of treatment every year yourself, for the rest of your pet’s life.

Financially capped cover
Some insurers call their financially capped cover ‘lifelong cover’. In this case, an insurer will pay out each year, but only up to a fixed total amount for each condition. After that, they will stop paying.
E.g :If your pet developed diabetes and you had a policy that was financially capped at £3,000, you may need to claim £2,000 in the first year. By year two, the amount you can claim for treatment of the diabetes is now just £1,000. After this, you would have to pay for the treatment for the rest of your pet’s life.

Lifelong cover
The best pet insurance is cover that pays for treatment up to a certain amount, every year, for as long as your pet needs treatment.
E.g :If your pet were to develop epilepsy and your policy covers up to £3,000 every year, you could claim for treatment up to this limit each year for the rest of your pet’s life.

Remember to compare these policies with your personal needs and circumstances.

ADDITIONAL COVER TYPES
Although veterinary fee cover is the key element of pet insurance, most insurers offer a range of additional benefits. These can include cover for:
” The cost of advertising and reward to recover your pet should it go missing;
” The cost of looking after your pet if you have to stay in hospital;
” The purchase price of your pet if it is lost or passes away;
” The cost of your pet causing damage for which you are legally liable.
” There are many more benefits available aside from these, so read through the full list of benefits to make sure the cover you have is right for you.
Have a go through these covers and think which is applicable to your circumstance or future. If are not the travelling types and have no intention of travelling outside the country with your pet there is hardly any point buying a pet travel cover , is it?

READ THE SMALL PRINT
It’s annoying having to read the tiny details about a policy. But all insurance plans have terms and conditions to make clear what is covered and what is not.
Once you’ve decided which cover suits you, price comparison site petsinsurancecompare has a pet insurance comparison service detailing different cover levels for cats ,dogs and horses. Unfortunately this only covers a limited number of providers but it’s still a good start as it produces a cheap benchmark price.

www.discountpetinsurance.net. Dogs like humans need to have their teeth brushed. Not brushing a dog’s teeth can lead to severe health problems. And, there is a right way and a wrong way to brush a dog’s teeth. Here is how to brush your dog’s teeth the right way so it will look forward to it every time. Why Do I need to Brush my Dog’s Teeth? Dogs can get food particles stuck between their teeth just like humans. They can also develop plaque which can result in gingivitis, cavities and other problems. A dog with teeth problems will not eat right and that will make for an unhappy, unhealthy dog with a bad disposition At the age of 8 weeks is a good time to start brushing your dog’s teeth. The earlier you can start this the easier it will be for your dog to enjoy teeth brushing. Introduce teeth brushing to your dog gradually, so they are not afraid. First , get a toothpaste that is made for dogs. NEVER use toothpaste made for humans. That can be harmful to dog teeth and dogs just do not like the taste of mint. Start by putting a small amount of dog tooth paste on your finger. Let your dog smell it and taste it. Do this for the first few days so your dog remembers the flavor. For the next few days take a small amount of the tooth paste and put it just inside their lips. Eventually rub it a little on their teeth. Now it is time to introduce the tooth brush. Make sure you have purchased a tooth brush that is designed for your breed of dog. Put a small amount of the tooth paste …

Deciding What To Do When You Have A Pet Allergy

Do you suspect that you have a pet allergy? You may have noticed that your eyes would get watery or you would wheeze every time you play with your cat or dog in your room. Your pet may be a new pet or you may already have had it for some years now. Either way, you just do not feel good after being near it.

At the same time, even though you have actually determined that you have a pet allergy, you simply cannot bring yourself to part with it. You have grown so attached to it that it is impossible to give it away.

To help decide if you should keep your pet or not, there are some factors that you need to consider. First, you need to understand what your pet allergy is about. A pet allergy does not mean that you are allergic to your cat or dog per se. It is the animal skin dander that you are allergic to. The dander is what will trigger the itchy, water eyes, sneezing, and affect the nasal passage. You may be just a little affected by your pet allergy or your symptoms can also be extremely severe.

If you wish to keep your pet, a conventional treatment is to use drugs to keep your allergic reactions under control. You may obtain pet allergy medication either over the counter or via a prescription from your doctor. If you are near your pet everyday, you may have to take medications everyday. However, this is hardly a desirable situation as drug medications can bring about side effects. You may not have realized this but taking drug medications on a daily basis for a prolonged period of time would take a toll on your health.

There are other ways to help reduce your pet allergy symptoms. Keeping your cat or dog out of your room and washing your hands after playing with it are some things that you can do.

Developing a pet allergy is pretty common. It is often said that your risk to getting a pet allergy is reduced if you have been exposed to a cat or dog at an early age. However, this is often debated on many forums and stands to be disputed.

If you decide to keep your dog or cat, then consider what you need to do to keep your pet allergy symptoms under control. If you have severe pet allergy symptoms despite taking preventative measures, then you may need to prioritize what you consider as important – your health or your pet.

Three-year-old Kate Slobodian, who is deathly allergic to some foods, awaits a new kind of service dog to keep her safe and ease her familys anxieties about her condition. The dog will sniff out peanuts or other allergens that threaten her. Her parents Ann and Brad Slobodian first heard from family and frends about Angel Service Dogs, a training center in Colorado where puppies are specially trained for allergy-sniffing expertise. But with Brad out of a job, raising 000 to get and train a puppy will not be easy. And theres one more challenge ahead Kate and her dad are both allergic to dogs. But Dr. Anju Peters, an allergist/immunologist with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, said pet allergies are more mild and can often be kept under control with over-the-counter medication. So getting an allergy service dog should still be feasible. The Slobodians, who live in Lindenhurst, are planning a fundraiser to help with the costs. In the meantime, in addition to routine allergy medications, the family travels with an arsenal of emergency ones and even a breathing device for Kate.
