Feed him a treat through the bars. Open the crate and let him out, and play the game again. Next time leave the door shut a little longer.

Once he understands the game start asking him to go into the crate and then give him the treat.

If he has to be in the crate for an extended period put a kong toy in there with him. You can stuff the kong a few hours before you leave with peanut butter and freezeit. This will give him something to play with while alone.
